In this blog post, I want to share why I made the difficult decision to shut down DevEvil Chat and DevEvil Connect!

DevEvil Chat started as a small hobby project. I originally built it because a close friend of mine couldn’t contact me due to internet restrictions in his country. To solve that, I created a simple private chat website for the two of us to communicate.

As time went on, I found myself building a small but supportive community. I decided to make the platform public, so others could also chat in a private and secure environment. The app was built using React and Firebase, and over the course of two years, it grew to over 150 users. To me, that number was massive. In total, users exchanged more than 500,000 messages and shared over 10,000 images. Unfortunately, maintaining and hosting the platform entirely for free became too overwhelming. The cost and time commitment eventually became unsustainable, and I had no choice but to shut it down.

DevEvil Connect! followed a similar path. It lasted about 8 months, reaching 235 users and generating 142 posts. Despite the promising growth, the challenges of keeping it running were too great, and I had to make the same hard decision to shut it down.

Thank you all so much for your support and for using these platforms. Even though these projects have come to an end, I remain committed to my goal of creating free, meaningful services for people. Stay tuned for what's next!
